A Momentous Week in US History
06 Nov 2008
This week has been a momentous one in US history and not only for Obama. The FCC has taken two pathbreaking decisions this week which give a legup to WiMAX and mobile broadband in the country.
The FCC has permitted the use of White Spaces in the TV spectrum for Mobile Broadband services in another decision. The decision by FCC is indeed a key one for many reasons. First, the spectral resources can no longer be afford to be… Continue

A Workshop ( Wireless India 2009) on March 2-4 2009 promises to be a major regulatory and policy maker melting pot. A dedicated group of experts ( Wireless Knowledge Woking group ) is now putting final touches to one of the largest wireless events of its kind to be held in India. Involving WiMAX, 3G and Mobile Broadcasting, this promises to bring together all the wireless technologies, their regulation and resource allocation ( such as spectrum) under a scanner.
Watch out for more… Continue

The newly announced changes to the 3G auction Policy and the WiMAX spectrum auctions now contains elements of recognition that WiMAX is not simply a way to extend wireless but an entirely viable and complete technology in itself. The recognition of the importance of WiMAX to be able to operate as an independent network providing voice, video and data services came in the form of doubling of the minimum reserve price for WiMAX auctions from Rs. 50.5 Billion ( $1.2Billion) to Rs 100.10 Billion (… Continue

The $ 1 Billion investment in the Sprint-Clearwire JV goes down to a simple demo where the comcast team witnessed unblemished video delivery while travelling in a car at 50 miler per hour. The video quality, which remained unaffected as the vehicle sped past multiple base stations with smooth handovers and the fact that this spectular delivery can be supported by over 150 MHz of Spectrum was all that remained to make a final decision. Mobile Broadcasting with… Continue

I liked a blog which I read on Pre-WiMAX network ( Clearwire) used to deliver radio. I strongly recommennd you read it. It was featured in RAIN ( Radio and Internet Newsletter). Here it is:
I have heard the Future in My Car
The potential to deliver broadcast related services and multimedia is one of the most underestimated applications of Mobile WiMAX. This is without even the… Continue

One of the tests of how ready a technology is to take off is to witness the number of products which are launched. Mobile WiMAX has been one of the technologies which has been constantly under the gaze as one which is “ too expansive” or “ does not work satisfactorily”. However many of these observations are hasty as is evident in the steady progress the technology is now making, week after week.
Earlier most products which were available were for Fixed WiMAX ( IEEE 802.16-2004) or for… Continue

The WiMAX signals emanating from India are indeed strong, with companies such as Tata Communications committing $ 500 million on the rollouts. Companies in India such as Telsima are also technology suppliers worldwide.
However the present rollouts in India are mostly based on Fixed WiMAX in the 3.4-3.6 GHz bands. The reality however is that virtually all new rollouts are now happening with Mobile WiMAX in 2.5 or 2.3 GHz bands. Mobile WiMAX technology is vastly superior with features such… Continue

NAB has not been a fora where wireless or WiMAX technologies take centre stage. This privilege is normally associated with events such as the WiMAX Forum World Congress, CTIA wireless or CES. Of late, with the broadcasting moving to the digital domain and the convergence technologies such as IPTV being the theme ( i.e. at NAB 2008) and mobile TV attracting extraordinary interest, operators attention has also been attracted to the new technologies. In the NAB, keynote speakers have also… Continue

Bidding on US Spectrum
The continuous round of biddings have been like a turning jackscrew and finally the bidders have reached the stratosphere. These bids have dwarfed any other bids made for spectrum and that too by a large margin. Why so much euphoria for terrestrial spectrum? It is almost certain that the bidders will be looking beyond the traditional DTV transmissions onto broadband wireless of the WiMAX variety. The WiMAX Forum has also announced the support of future certification… Continue

Sprint and Clearwire coming together again?
The deal if it goes through will give a new dimension to mobile WiMAX in the US and perhaps in parts of Europe. Embroiled as they are in the 700 MHz spectrum auction, the companies have bid over $19 Billion for 700 MHz spectrum, which has just now been declared as one for which certification profiles" will be announced" by the WiMAX forum. However Sprint and Clearwire can sew together virtually all of the mobile WiMAX spectrum in the… Continue
