The story begun on May,2008 when Libya Telecom selected Alcatel-Lucent to deploy the first commercial WIMAX network based on the 802.16e-2005 WiMAX standard, in Libya.Libya Telecom planned to launch the commercial service on the network in September 2008.

Finally at the end of January 2009, Libya Telecom start to provide WiMAX service called Libyamax. Now available in Tripoli and other major cities in Libya.

Libya is North Africa’s first market to deploy WiMAX. Built by three leading telecommunications equipment makers, France’s Alcatel-Lucent, and China’s ZTE and Huawei, this new WiMAX network is meant to accommodate more than a quarter million users. The service managed by Libya Telecom and Technology Corporation (LTT), the country’s primary Internet mobile services company.

Libyamax boast mobile WiMAX connection at 2Mbps speed.The service plan available for 400 LYD for 10 months (no monthly plan).You can only pay every 10 months. Monthly Bandwidth is 10GB, if you use more then the monthly bandwidth you can add more bandwidth for 10 LYD for 500 MB.

This WiMAX deployment in Libya is very exciting. Note that I posted an article about Egypt's MoI WiMAX deployment. How does it compare to Libya's? Is Libya's WiMAX just for commercial Internet users or are there other apps, e.g. VoIP?

Hi Alan,I don't have any comparison data yet. At this time Libyamax only provide mobile WiMAX service.
