WiMAX used for backhaul in Turkey and as a private multi-service network in Egypt

I. Here's an example of WiMAX being used for backhaul in Turkey:

Proxim's WiMAX Provides Wireless Backhaul for Turkey's Largest Video Surveillance Network

This deployment is a direct result of an initiative by Turkey's Department of the Interior to roll out video surveillance across the entire country. Prior to deploying Proxim's WiMAX radios as backhaul, the city of Bodrum had attempted to utilize traditional wired telecom infrastructure for the video surveillance network. But as an old, historical city, it was impossible to trench the number of lines that would have been necessary to provide enough throughput for the large number of cameras.


II. Egypt's MoI fixed WiMAX Deployment - A Secure and Reliable Private Network

Fixed WiMAX is used for communications between buildings by the Egyptian Ministry of Interrior (MoI). Police stations in Cairo are being interconnected using Aperto Networks Fixed WiMAX (IEEE 802.16d compliant) gear operating over 3.5GHz licensed spectrum. Other vendors are also involved in this network:
-NEC provides the microwave backhaul from HQ to the regional police stations.
-Cisco provides the core backbone routers in the HQ, and ...
-HP Open View is the network management platform.

This private communications network has the following attributes:
-Provides Secure Access to Remote MoI Branch Divisions (Police Stations)
-Integrated services: Phone Lines, Data, Internet Access & TDM over Ethernet
-Over 50 Aperto PacketMax Base Stations and 700 Subscriber Units already installed- more coming!
-12 Sectors, confirmed delivery via Automatic Request for Repeat (ARQ) protocol, QoS, Encryption, and Redundancy

Phase 1 of the deployment (between central and sub-central police stations) is ongoing and will be completed within six to seven months. At that time, there will be 1100 WiMAX subscriber units and 80-100 Base Stations. Telephony, video conferencing and data/Internet are the applications that have already been used over this Fixed WiMAX network.

According to Brigadeer Engineer Hassan Khoadairy of Egypt's MoI, WiMAX was the only effective solution for a point to multi-point (P2MP) wireless network that interconnects the headquarters building to sub central and smaller police stations. Fixed WiMAX was said to have greater signal stability then proprietary broadband wireless platforms (e.g. Motorola Canopy)- particularly for non Line of Site operation. WiMAX was also more reliable over the large coverage area of deployment.

Here is a Q and A on Egypt's MoI fixed WiMAX deployment. Answers were provided by Aperto Networks:

1. Why did MoI choose WiMAX versus competing technologies?

Answer: MoI needed PTP connectivity for 30 police centers over a wide area, but had no fiber or cable infrastructure. WiMAX was the fastest and cheapest solution for delivering the necessary connectivity to support MoI's needs. WiMAX (ne PacketMAX) is a better technology than Canopy in terms of providing NLOS connectivity and performs better under difficult atmospheric conditions. Canopy is unstable and gives many false signals. WiMAX provides more reliable connectivity.

2. Can you comment on the size of your network, the number of base stations, number of end users, etc.?

Answer: MoI has installed almost 50 Aperto PacketMAX 5000 base stations to achieve blanket coverage in the Delta area, plus almost 300 PacketMAX 300s. MoI has also ordered an additional 350-400 PacketMAX 300 subscriber units. End users are police officers in police stations, with an unknown number of actual users. The potential number of uses is 4x the number of installed CPE.

3. What are the most important applications?

Answer: MoI is using PacketMAX technology for diverse applications, including data/Internet, telephony (VoIP and analog), connecting their PABX, connecting trunking systems (i.e. Tetra systems ) and to provide internet connectivity for certain non-police sites. They haven’t used the system for video surveillance, but it has been used for video conferencing.

4. How is the resiliency/reliability of WiMAX?

Answer: MoI had to ensure to make its equipment always stays up, from the base stations through switches, etc. To ensure reliability, MoI has deployed a strong core backbone with Cisco routers, HP Overview, Castlerock, and conducts random checks tracking the speed of response to reported problems. For WiMAX, MoI use ISDN to provide wireline back-up and also uses other microwave systems such as NEC Microwave. The network signal goes from 5-6 kilometers in urban locations, to as far away as 25-30 kilometers in more rural locations. Only WiMAX can provide this type of connectivity. MoI maximizes reliability through the use of redundant MSC cards, redundant power supplies, 6 active WSCs, and 6 standby WSCs within the same chassis.

5. What are MoI's plans for future growth/expansion of its network? What is the time frame?

Answer: MoI 's network will provide connectivity to 80-100 regional police substations beyond the those currently connected. The expansion could be supported with WiMAX, fiber, or other technologies. The work should be done 6-7 months from now. Eventually, the network will expand to all police stations, including 600 central stations and 1,200 small stations, and then be connected to MoI's headquarters. MoI's network of police stations has the following structure: HQ → regional stations (substations) → central stations → small rural stations.

6. What are MoI's other plans for beyond this expansion?

Answer: MoI backhauls its media to headquarters through a combination of fiber and wireless. Central stations and regional substations are connected with wireline connections to HQ, but the remote rural stations are connected to central stations with WiMAX.

ofcourse it is a great initiative specially our security should be more tighten and we should look for new
innovatiove means of deployement to make or surveillance more rigourous.
I dont know weather in egypt you have got wimax licence , because in india we are still waiting for licence and
a revolution in wimax field is still waiting to be unfold.

Please share to us some more deployement in this regards it will be a great help for us ....

The Egypt MoI has a license for WiMAX. I believe it is at 3.5GHz. VoIP, TDM over Ethernet, Internet access and data exchange between offices are all supported over fixed WiMAX. Approximately 30 police stations are interconnected to one another in a chain like arrangement. THey will also be connected to the MoI Headquarters building in Cairo.

Thx for taking interest in my queries.. please find my interest aspects..

1.For connecting stations are we using p2m point or p2p connection??
2.What is the throughput we are getting for both FDD and TDD??
3. is there any redundancy taken during deployement..

India has a vast possibility of conncecting all its governments houses with wimax to get all the desired services
Schools and colleges will be next big project we have some deployement but thats on unlicensed band..

Pravesh, Here are the answers to your questions from Aperto Networks:

1. For connecting stations are we using p2m point or p2p connection?? Yes, part of the base stations are connected through MOI's NEC microwave links, others through EL Masria Lel Itissalat fiber network (Egypt Telecom).

2. What is the throughput we are getting for both FDD and TDD? Our system doesn't support FDD, so we are only doing TDD. The throughput varies depending on channel width and modulation used (ex: up to 8.5 Mbps for a 3.5MHz channel).

3. Is there any redundancy taken during deployment. There are different redundancies on different network segments. On our part, we are using the PM5000 chassis with its redundancy features such as dual MSCs and redundant WSCs.
